The Damaging Effects of Moss on your
Composition Roof
Moss holds moisture on your roof. During the freeze and thaw cycles of fall and winter, the moisture loosens the surface tension of the tar in the fiberglass shingles and causes the granules to come off prematurely. You need the granules to protect your roof from the ultraviolet rays in sunlight and also take the brunt of the hot/cold cycle of the day and night temperatures. Without the granules, the tar shingles dry out more quickly and lose their water repellency.
Moss holds up the edges of the shingles and forms dams that slow water from running down the roof. The water flows sideways and can damage under the shingles and can compromise the roof sheathing and cause the roof to leak.
Moss also has rhizomes that reach around granules. As they soak up water and dry out, their rhizomes work to loosen the granules and pry them from the shingles.
The Damaging Effects of Moss on your Cedar Roof
First, let me start by stating, that the U.S Department of Agriculture states, "For each year a shake roof goes untreated it loses three years off its estimated remaining life." That is made pretty clear, don't you think? Here's why:
Moss is very acidic. When moss sits on a cedar roof it will retain moisture all year round and will accelerate the deterioration of cedar.
Also, when temperatures drop below freezing, the water that has saturated into the wood fibers expands. As it thaws and freezes again, the damage to the wood's anatomy is increased.Once, the cedar is damaged, it is susceptible to ultraviolet light that will attack the wood fiber in the cedar and produce heat. This heat will dry out the natural wood binding resins, causing the cedar shakes to become brittle. As time goes on, this can cause the roof to leak.
The Damaging Effects of Moss on your Tile Roof
Moss can grow under the overlapping shingle. Moss holds moisture which will freeze and thaw with the changing weather and cause the shingles to crack. Cracked shingles can cause substantial leaking that may be hard to find and fix. Not to mention, moss is not very ascetically pleasing to the eye.
The Damaging Effects of Clogged Gutters & Your Health!
The integrity of your roof and gutter system can present serious risks to the rest of your home or building by erosion. Clogged gutters can actually cause significant foundation damage that will endanger your home and potentially your health. Gutters that aren’t regularly serviced can swiftly cause damage to your home or building.
Erosion will weaken your structure by steadily removing each layer of the foundation causing it to crack and leak. Erosion happens when water accumulates around your home. The clogged gutters misdirect the flow of rainwater. When the foundation leaks it allows water to damage the structural integrity your home. Leaks, flooding and mold are a immediate result of cracks in your foundation. Mold puts your families health at serious risk. The exposure of mold can affect your family’s ability to breathe causing allergic reactions and could eventually cause pulmonary conditions!
